Statement On Municipal Election Victories

Yesterday, thousands of Chicagoans placed votes for socialist candidates in the 2023 Municipal Election. In total, 6 of our chapter’s 10 endorsed aldermanic candidates finished in first place, either winning their races outright or advancing to a runoff.

Our incumbents’ seats are secure. Of our 5 sitting socialist alderpersons, 4 won their races outright, while a fifth, Daniel La Spata of the 1st Ward, will advance to a runoff having earned just shy of 50% of the vote. Chicago DSA congratulates Alders. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, Byron Sigcho-Lopez, and Jeanette Taylor on their victories, and extends our deep gratitude to the DSA members, campaign volunteers, and organizers across dozens of partner organizations who made these wins possible.

CDSA is also thrilled to congratulate Angela Clay on her incredible night in the 46th Ward. With the largest share of votes and a sizable lead over her closest competition, Angela will be advancing to a runoff with CDSA’s enthusiastic support. We look forward to sending Angela to City Council on April 4th.

We would like to thank CDSA-endorsed candidates Oscar Sanchez, Ambria Taylor, Nick Ward, and Warren Williams for their leadership. Each fought a hard campaign and furthered the cause of expanding the working class movement. Our volunteers in the 10th, 11th, 48th, and 30th Wards should be proud of all they have accomplished in this election.

In the coming weeks, every resource and dirty trick the capitalist class has at its disposal will be used against socialists in the runoffs. We invite everyone who shares our vision of a Chicago for all to join us in fighting back. Together, we can secure victory for Angela and Daniel, and show the billionaires and developers that this city belongs to the working class.

Solidarity,
Officers of Chicago DSA
