Chaos or Community: Mutual Aid from Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria

Who do you turn to in times of ecological and economic crisis? After the US government failed to address much of the devastation from Hurricane Maria, Luis Rodriguez Sanchez, Christine Nieves and their neighbors in Puerto Rico turned to each other. They established Proyecto de Apoyo Mutuo Mariana, a mutual aid project to restore vital community services in the wake of the storm.

Luis and Christine, along with Miguel Alvelo of Chicago Boricua Resistance and Michael Tekhen Strode of the Chicago DSA Solidarity Economy Working Group, discuss how we can use mutual aid to respond to the ecological and economic crisis of capitalism here in Chicago, as well.

Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez moderates.
